Failure Drill - First Fiction for Taylor Press

Taylor Press is pleased to announce the arrival of "Failure Drill" by James Tarr. Normally we're don't "do" novels here at Taylor Press, but James Tarr's real-life experience as a policeman and private investigator in Michigan and his irreverent, Gen-X style won us over. In "Failure Drill" Tarr blends bits of the American gun culture with movie and pop-cultural references in a very entertaining way. On top of his law enforcement experience, Tarr is a master-level competition shooter, with an interest in practical 3-Gun shooting -- a background that lends unusual technical clarity to his work.

"Failure Drill" explores various themes of interest to Taylor Press, but the philosophical underpinnings of the book were what sold us on it. If you have an interest in the extraordinary capabilities of young men, the just use of force, firearms, and the expression of those ideas in modern movies, get your copy now.

SYNOPSIS:
"Failure Drill" tracks what happens to John Phault, a former DEA agent working as a private investigator in Detroit. Phault takes a missing persons case as a favor to a friend, and his relatively sedate life disintegrates. Every time he turns around someone else is trying to kill him, and the more he looks for 20-year-old Jerry Phillips, the more questions he has about why this honor student would arm himself to the teeth and then just disappear.

Nine Lives of an Alaska Bush Pilot

"The difference between Eichner's tales and those of others is that only Eichner has flown fixed wing aircraft and helicopters for 58 years. . . . Among authors about flying in Alaska, his experience is unequalled."
-- Lew Williams Jr. , Ketchikan Daily News

". . . Aside from good entertainment, Eichner's book is a great ground school course in Alaska bush flying. He built his company, TEMSCO, from a one-machine operation in the early 1950's to more than 40 machines and 24 fixed wing aircraft covering Alaska by the time he sold out in 1989."
-- Lew Williams Jr., Ketchikan Daily News

"Once I got started reading Ken's book, I missed many hours' sleep, as it was difficult to put down."
-- Jim Hamilton, Bell Helicopters (retired), in Twirlybirds Newsletter

Written by legendary rescue pilot Ken Eichner, "9 Lives" explores the life and adventures of one of the first helicopter bush pilots in Alaska. Explore the early days of helicopters as Ken tells us of his adventures as a pilot from the second world war through the present day.

This is a great book for anyone into the Alaskan sprit, who enjoys helicopters, or who wants to experience the incredible adventures of one man's life.  352 pages, illustrated, 6" by 9" softcover.

Ken Eichner Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

Ken Eichner recently won the prestigious Les Morris award for lifetime achievement in helicopter aviation at the HAI convention in Las Vegas. The award, presented by the Twirlybirds (a society of pioneer helicopter pilots) comes on the heels of Eichner's recent book "Nine Lives of an Alaska Bush Pilot."
Eichner was kept busy at the convention by pilots young and old, coming up to him to share experiences, and to ask him about his recent interview in ROTOR Magazine. Eichner and Jack Real (former president of Hughes Helicopters) shared the HFI booth, with Real selling copies of his self-published work, "The  Asylum of Howard Hughes" (available from ExLibris)."
"I'm deeply honored," said Eichner. "It's very humbling to be recognized by this group of people."
Les Morris was one of the first test pilots at Sikorsky helicopters, and made a tremendous contribution to the development of vertical flight. Eichner used some of the first helicopters to come to Southeast Alaska to great effect. Aided by a number of renowned pilots (particularly the late Joe Soloy), Eichner's firm (TEMSCO Helicopters) took the science developed by Morris, and found commercial applications for it ranging from fisheries management to mineral exploration. That said, Eichner is best known for flying his helicopter in search and rescue missions throughout Southeast, where he frequently put his life on the line to save others.
